ABOUT SCHOOL OF BASIC MIDWIFERY, ADAZI

Adazi-Nnukwu’s St. Joseph’s Hospital was established in 1938 by the Onitsha Catholic Archdiocese. It was the sole medical facility in the former province of Awka and beyond at the time. Bringing healthcare to the hinterlands was one of the founding fathers’ goals. Following a visit by the Nigerian Midwives Board, the School of Midwifery began offering Grade II Midwifery Training in 1940. Following a re-inspection by the Nursing and Midwifery Board in February 1963, the school was promoted to Grade I Midwifery Training School. Before deciding to just provide the Basic Midwifery Program in 2003, the school offered both Basic and Post Basic Midwifery programs.The school is renowned for its high standards and effective midwifery training.
Nigeria’s nursing and midwifery education and practice have undergone reform, and nursing and midwifery programs and certifications have been upgraded to non-terminal OND and HND programs. With the assistance of the Anambra State Government at the time, the proprietor reconstructed the school’s building to house the nursing and midwifery schools as well as their residences. This allowed the institution to undergo reform, which resulted in the establishment of the College of Nursing Sciences at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Adazi-Nnukwu.
